It was late fall 2017 and I was sitting in an airport somewhere in the United States booking my flights for the following weeks. I can't remember exactly where I was, or going next for that matter as our busy season had me on the road for over 30 consecutive weeks each year. The life of a management consultant had been exciting for a while but the novelty of living in hotels and airports was beginning to wear thin.
For some time I had been toying with the idea of starting my own business but hadn’t quite settled on what I wanted to do. I knew for certain that I had a passion for working with my hands. I had also spent most of my childhood and nearly all of my adult life connected to the Lumber and Building Material Industry in some way. This wasn’t much of a coincidence as my grandfather and father were both significantly involved in the ownership and development of Prout’s Building Center which has been serving Lambton County and surrounding area for nearly a century and a half. My other grandfather had also built a number of homes in Northern Ontario over his lifetime. Whether it was riding around in the forklift, building forts from yard scrap, installing kitchen cabinets, balancing month end or systematically reshaping and developing lumber yards my exposure to the industry was gradually shaping what was next to come.
As a voice over the loud-speaker pleasantly told us that our flight had been delayed for the third time .I put my phone down in frustration and stared out the window. Off in the distance I could see the top of a crane lifting what was unmistakably a roof truss. Sitting there watching the crane I became envious of the builder. ‘There they are doing what I would love to do and here I am stuck deciding what flavor of beef jerky I would be having for dinner…again’.
As the peak of the roof started to take shape I picked up my phone, opened an email to myself and typed…
becoming a builder
Over the next few months I researched, planned, networked and planned some more. What started as a simple list soon grew into a strategy for becoming a licensed builder and in the mean-time a turn-key service that would have me trading my briefcase for a tool belt.
Fast forward a few years and I haven’t been in an airport since. Instead I have been on the “other side of the glass” designing and building residential homes and outdoor structures. To-date we have undertaken and overseen the construction of residential projects ranging from single detached condominium units to subdivision and estate homes throughout Lambton County.
